The media artifact that I picked is the famous fight scene from The Notebook. This goes with my research on how interpersonal communication affects long term romantic relationships in so many ways. In the clip Noah is arguing with Allie because she came back to him for a weekend while she was engaged to another man, and Noah thinks that him and Allie should still be together. Once Allie leaves she really thinks about everything Noah said to her in that argument and it clicks and they end up back together. With Noah letting everything out and having Allie really listen and think about it, it helped solved the problems they are having, and it made Allie realize where he was coming from. Noah also talks about how the decision Allie must make between picking Noah or her fiancé isn’t what everyone else wants, it what she wants. Which really speaks volumes on how interpersonal communication can affect relationships in a negative way. You can’t listen to what everyone is saying, what matters is what you feel and think, and your happiness. Interpersonal communication is huge in romantic relationships, without it couples would do nothing but argue and eventually breakup because nothing gets solved.
At the beginning of my research I knew that communication is important in any relationship and from personal experience that if you don’t communicate with each other it solves nothing and can even make matters worse. As I continued my research I have discovered just how important it really is, and what factors can play into it. I also learned that there is a Relation Turbulence Theory that goes into great detail about what parts of communication affect what parts of relationships. It states, “Thus, communication can have a reciprocal influence on the very appraisals and emotions that motivate interaction in the first place.” Which I found so true, lack of communication can cause lack of any interaction.
My annotated bibliography has set me up to take my research on multiple different paths to cover different types of communication, as well as different types of relationships. For example, I found an article that talks about how interpersonal communication affects long distance relationships. I have also found an article about how social media and privacy affects relationships. I am excited to continue my research and learn more about the topic, and hopefully pick up some communication skills of my own along the way. #CommunicateToDoGreat #LoveNeedsWords
