COMM333 Reflection

After completing my COMM 333 ePortfolio I feel like I improved my professional presence in many ways. The first way is that its given me the skills and tools I need to present who I am in a professional way. I can use this portfolio to my advantage with possible future employers, to later on showcase my work as a professional, and so much more. Another way it has improved my professional presence by showing me how to professionally write about topics, but still be fun and relative to my profession. Being able to use persuasion as a communication skill in my field is an important skill to have, using it in the blog post in a professional way has helped me understand and provided me a new skill to use as I continue on in my career.

What I like most about my ePortfolio is not just how I am able to express myself in a creative and professional way, but it showcases all the communication skills I have obtained along the way. I feel like my blog post use those skills and seeing my communication skills and the different subject of communication I have used, this course and other courses I have taken, and how they have progressed professionally is something I enjoy about this ePortfolio because I’m always growing and progressing in my career as a stylist and see that growth is something I enjoy.

My favorite assignment from persuasion that has been poste to my ePortfolio would have to be the advertisement analysis assignment. I favor this assignment because I found it interesting and fun to complete. Completing this assignment it made me realize how much advertisements really use persuasion as well as the motivational appeal(s) they use in them as well. It showed me how everyday things use communication factors in so many different ways, as well as how different companies who sell or have similar products can use different factors but get the same message across, plus this assignment I found to be the most fun and creative since we had to create a video of our analysis.

As for the most challenging aspect of the ePortfolio, I would have to say part 3, the artifact analysis. I struggled with this assignment because I have difficulties thinking of different movies or documentaries that included persuasion, and also being able to identify what course topics and theories they were. There are a lot of similar sounding topics and trying to narrow down which was used was difficult for me. Plus being able to critically analyze is something I struggle in.

My advice to future students about this part of the eportfolio is to really sit down and do your research on the topics. The more research you conduct on the course topics and theories the more you will understand, and they will make sense and you’ll be able to identify them no problem. It may be more work, but it’s worth it.

The persuasion component that I found the most interesting would actually be two different ones that go hand and hand. I found traits and characteristics interesting as well as groups and conformity. Being able to see how persuasion can affect different people based on their characteristics, such as gender, age, and even cultural influences. As for groups and conformity, I see persuasion happen in these situations on the daily basis, and even at work, so really learning about it and completing research on why it happens was extremely interesting to me. There were a lot of other components that were also interesting, but these two I related to and see more often than the others.

I would say that my view of persuasion is different from the start of this course. I feel like now that I have done research and have learned about the different components that make up persuasion, I know understand it more and therefore it has changed my view of it completely. I now understand why people do the things they do when it comes to persuasion. It makes a world of difference your view of things when you have a better/ basically complete understanding of the topic. I really enjoyed this course and everything it has taught me and I’m glad my view of persuasion has changed, because persuasion isn’t always a bad thing, and it has helped me grow my communication skills.
