There were a couple things I found challenging when I was creating my COMM ePortfolio. The first was figuring out how to make my WIX page, I had never used that website before, or designed a website/portfolio, so I was unsure of how to go about it. Another thing I found challenging would have to be using the different formatting correctly. I have always had a hard time with formatting for the various styles, APA, or MLA, so using them in some of the post challenged me.
I feel like I have improved in multiple ways regarding professional presence after completing this portfolio. I feel like I have improved my professional writing, such as being more formal when writing post. I also feel like I have improved on the way I present myself online. Before taking this class, I didn’t really think about things I posted online before doing so, after this class and portfolio I think before posting and make sure what is posted presents me in a professional way. I didn’t think my online presence could have an impact on my professional life, but it really can. The last thing I improved on would have to be how I present myself professionally. Completely this ePortfolio has given me the skills on how increase my professional appearance online, and how to promote myself and my business in a professional and efficient way.
Advice I would give to future students taking this class for their potential uses and designing the COMM ePortfolio would be a few things. One thing would be taking it seriously, it may just be an assignment for a class, but the information and skills you can gain from it can benefit you and your professional career in the future. Another thing would be take what you have learned and use it to your advantage, like I am going to continue using my WIX page from a hair portfolio once I graduate from Old Dominion. Using it can really help increase your audience for your work. And lastly when you design your portfolio, make sure it represents who you are as a professional. You want to make sure your audience sees who you are and takes you seriously after viewing it.
Out of all the assignments we completed this semester, I had two favorites. One would have to be the policy rewrite, and the other would be the literature review and presentation. I liked this policy rewrite assignment because I liked being able to look at different policies that are out there and change things to make it up to date or to what I think it should be. I found that there were a lot of outdated or strange policies out there, which was kind of shocking, but changing the wording or the policy all together was fun. And for the literature review, I really enjoyed conducting research on a topic that I have personally experienced and have seen people close to me experience. Being able to conduct research on work overload and burnout was quite interesting, and I ended up learning a lot from it. Being able to learn what all they can affect, and different ways to cope with it, I will now be able to put the information to use and help the people I’m close with, and myself, prevent and resolve their work overload and burnout.
Lastly, I would say my view of work-life communication is different from when I began this course and many ways. I now understand valuable professional communication skills that I hadn’t in the past. I have also adopted a new value for professional communication, and why it is an important skill to have, without them communicating in a professional setting would be unbearable. Knowing what I know now, I bring the skills into my professional work setting and try to help my fellow coworkers adopt the same understanding and skills that I have from this class, so we can communicate in an efficient way compared to what has been happening. Overall, I really enjoyed this class and will be taking away important and beneficial information and skills I can use in my everyday professional setting.
